HISTORY

Degioz alla fine del 1800 - Collezione SebastianoUntil Century Xv the territoryofValsavarenchebelonged to Introd Parish, but by the end of Century XIII a little Chapel were already existing in Degioz, as resulted from the infeudation document dated 1296.

In 1405 Introd priest only was used to get there to celebrate Mass, as resulted from an engagement of Pietro Fusina on Feb 8th 1405, consisting in a yearly payment to Introd priest to celebrate Christian celebrations in Valsavarenche on S.ta Maria Maddalena day.

This service was not enough for the population, obliged to stay without any religious assistance especially during winter, particularly long and hard, when people were isolated because of many avalanches. They applied to Card. Di Santa Sabrina who was ex Pope Felice V, Amedeo III di Savoia, to have some help. He ordered that Aosta Bishop Mgr. Antonio De Prez went in Valsavarenche to celebrate Mass every Sunday in January, February, March and April. His successor Mons. Francesco De Prez ordered by a decree dated 19th March 1483 to build the Madonna della Fonte Chapel and the Church. The Aosta Vicebalivo Pietro di Introd and other  people were opposed to this Parish but they lost and Valsavarenche finally got its Church.

Mons. Lambert made a relation in 1695 in Romesaying that Church was in a lay patronage but this right had never been exercised.

CHURCH

La chiesa di Valsavarenche The building has a rectangular plan, at Latin Cross with semicircular apses. The first Church was probably the “Madonne dela Fontaine” Chapel, already existing in Degioz until 1673 when Noble Pietro Filiberto de Roncas Marchese di Caselle ordered to rebuild it.

This new building was blessed on 10th June 1673 as a great solemnity, but two century after its conditions were so damaged that a new rebuilt was necessary. The generous King Umberto I permitted to build the Church as you can see today, blessed on 11th September 1889Chiesa a pianta rettangolare a croce latina con absidi semicircolari.
